Drug addiction involves the consistent pattern of using legal or illegal drugs or medications and difficulty controlling drug use. Repeated drug use causes individuals to require more of the drug to get the same effects, otherwise known as increasing their tolerance.
Drug addiction usually begins after experimental use of a drug or when a medication is prescribed. However, depending on the drug, the risk of addiction varies.
Those with drug addiction also experience withdrawal symptoms when they stop using or significantly decrease their drug intake. Drug effects and symptoms of withdrawal vary depending on the substance.
